Nightstands/Bedside Tables

I know. Another table post. Last one. I questioned doing it because we've already had two (even though they were about living rooms, not bedrooms) but I said I would so here goes! Hope you find something helpful, or at least interesting... :-)

As I mentioned in previous posts, think outside the box on what you can use. Is there a piece that you already own that is not called a nightstand, but could be used as one?

How about suitcases? This photo is from House Beautiful, but Pottery Barn also shows the idea here

Nightstands don't have to match but they should be the same height, if possible. I went with mismatched in my bedroom and they're not quite the same height, so I made up the difference in the lamp heights and the overall effect is balanced.

they used inexpensive tray tables topped with a mirror. To see how they did it click here.

Have you ever seen floating nightstands? I see them used occasionally and I’m intrigued by them. HGTV gives you a tutorial on how to make one here, and Candice Olson uses the idea here. Could you also take the legs off of an existing piece of furniture and mount it or would that be too strange? What are your thoughts on the idea?

Skirt a table. In this case the skirted table is functional both for the bed and the chair. If you're interested in making your own table skirt, there are instructions here and here.

If space is an issue, mounting a shelf like this would be a good solution!

Of course this is a great idea for a room where you just really don't have any room beside the bed.

Night stand height - ideally should be at least as high as the top of the mattress

(Sorry if this is a duplicate; had problems with previous comment).
Love these ideas and I think in a guest room, where space might be limited, you can have a lot of fun with creative options. I have a skirted table on one side of our bed but would like to make a nicer cloth for it - thanks for the links!

These are great ideas and I am loving the tray with a mirror on it. I currently have basically a dorm-style end table that can be taken apart in pieces. It is made of plastic and fake wood, I hate it basically. I have been shopping around online for a new nightstand or two, but they are so expensive and usually have bad reviews because they are made of cheap materials.

I think I might try the tray idea! Thank you very much!

I had purchased two side tables from Bombay {before they closed here in the US} at one of their $49.00 table sales. I love them because I can use them anywhere. So when we down-size they can stay in a bedroom or move to a den.

I need nightstands with plenty drawers! that way I can quickly store all of my magazines and papers that I have on top of them most of the time!

I think you should use whatever size and shape table suits your space. Love the sofa table between beds... a small chest or desk would do that job too. As for lamps, I have mismatched night tables of different heights and tried to compensate with lamps of different heights. Right now though, I'm toying with the idea of swing-arm wall-mounted lamps. I'd get more symmetry and still have the mismatched tables I love.

I love the idea of floating nightstands. They create much more visual space in a smaller room than a traditional nightstand.

These are great ideas!!
I love the suitcases. I'm going to be scouring the charity shops for tables & suitcases just because I've been inspired by your coffee table & nightstand posts! Keep 'em coming!

Love love love the suitcases! I wish I had those in my bedroom, or even in my living room.

Some great ideas. I saw an idea a while back to use if your space is limited. The designer mounted shelves with pretty brackets to the walls on each side of the bed. A good solution and inexpensive.

The sofa table between twin bed is genius! Love the drapery in that room too! Great post-these photos are all very inspiring as I am in the home stretch of decorating our guest bedroom/my office. :)

Love the inspiration pics. I'm going to be starting my guest room redo soon. I love vintage items so I'm going to use some of my vintage suitcase collection as one nightstand..I've seen it done a lot but I love it! Thanks for the tips about the height of the nightstands too.

All of the ideas are great for me, except the suitcases. My husband travels 100,000 miles a year and would probably end up stealing the night table if I used suitcases.

as a side note, i love the way that huge sailboat blocks the window but still allows light in... gorgeous...

I love the look of the old suitcases, but do you have any hints on how to get rid of the musty smell that comes with most of them??? I have tried airing in the hot sunshine, but that doesn't seem to get it all out. thanks, the pictures are great and loaded with great ideas!!

I love bedside tables! Love all the possibilities you discussed here. We have matching tables in our master bedroom - they are actually wooden plant stands with 4 shelves - great for holding all my magazines!!

Creative and great inspiration. I love the variety of choices, yet each one looks like it belongs to the room. Often it seems like someone just "made do" with whatever was handy.
I love the idea of cutting down a table to afix to a wall vs just a plain box floating shelf. Seems like a decorator did something like this on HGTV but cut a table in half and adhered to the wall. I feel a "honey-do" request coming on now....

Oh! I want to do the suitcases. I am hunting for some actually. Love that idea.

Thanks so much for helping me to consider non-traditional bed stands. I'm fed-up with our currents ones. Time to look around.
