Reed Wall, Wax Art, and an Unexpected Art Grouping

My friend, Natalie, is the (very talented) accessory buyer for the Schneiderman's furniture stores and the merchandiser for their Plymouth store. I've been there when she's swapping out and setting up new furniture vignettes and it's an amazing thing to watch! She's very quick and they always end up looking great.

So anyhoo... I was there yesterday looking for a couple of small pieces for a project I'm working on (and found exactly what I was looking for!). There were a few things that caught my eye as I shopped and I thought I would share them with you.

Natalie wanted to add some texture to the bedroom vignette that you see at the beginning of this post, so she purchased some reed fencing at Home Depot and just nailed it with very small nails to the wall. She nailed it at the top and then added some sporadically just to hold it in place. I thought it was such a clever idea! The cost to do this vignette was $50 ($25 per roll).

If you try this, she wanted you to be aware that there will be some rough edges that will show (see photo below) so you have to be okay with that.

This next thing I absolutely love! I'm sure you've heard of Vance Kitira candles. The photo below is of some of their new artwork. The interesting thing is that the different elements you see in each frame are actually set in WAX. Is that cool or what? (in case you're wondering what the little white blocks are underneath each one is - they're price tags, not part of the art.)

I was across the store when I saw this little vignette. Thinking it was some kind of painted metal art (and what a great example it would have been for the wall art post that I did the other day), I decided to go closer and get a photo. Once there, I just started laughing when I realized that it wasn't art at all, but the wood samples from the table company whose tables were displayed close by that she had creatively displayed! Once again proving that you can create a dramatic statement by grouping items that may not be that impressive on their own!

I'm linking my Mudroom/Laundry Room Bench post to The DIY Showoff surprise party today...

Hope you're having an AWESOME day!

I love the table finish display and would use that idea, forget buying a table. Ha! What a unique wax art collection. The walls look interesting, but in a home full of pets I would have furry walls in no time for sure.

Wow! How unique is that?

Love the texture that the reed fencing adds to the wall! Sounds easy and I think I'd try to "finish" those rough ends with a natural colored cotton twill tape - depending on how thick and difficult the reeds would be to sew through. Very fun! Thanks for the great idea - this would be great with the robin's egg blue I'm toying with for my master bath . . . Hmmm.

I love the items set in wax. I can't believe Martha Stewart didn't think of it first!

That sounds like it would be a great temporary solution for apartment dwellers who want to do something with their walls! Very creative idea!

How cool are these?! The wax idea is awesome as are the walls. The table idea definitely looks like art :)

The wall treatment is fab. So is the price. I'll be checking that out soon. Lol at the wall art!

Very clever ideas. I love the reed wall and it sounds easy enough for a basic DIYer like myself. I also loved the wood samples as wall art.

I actually really like the wood samples-turned-art! Totally looks like something you'd buy at C&B or West Elm.

Hi PK -- Thanks for your nice comment on our blog; glad you liked the Snowflake Magnets. I have a few more crystals left, so I'm working on them for this weekend's show. I was really pleased with how they turned out and will miss them when they've all gone to new homes! Love your blog -- lots of great ideas. Come and visit me again! xo

Reed fencing? Never heard of it, but it looks great! I have been wanting to do a grasscloth project, but it is kinda pricey and I hear a pain in the you-know-what to install. This is really cool - I might have to borrow this idea! Can I really get that at Home Depot?

She did get the reed fencing at Home Depot - I'm just not sure if it's a seasonal thing or not so you'll have to check.

That reed fencing is like grasscloth on steroids. Love all the great texture. I've seen it hung on a ceiling too, between beams, looks like you're in a tropical hut.

I am completely loving the wood table samples hung on the wall ~ I would have totally thought they were wall art as well! Umm - I may have to find a manufacture that will let me purchase some of these....I am looking to fill a huge space in our family room with a natural element. Great idea and fabulous look even if not intended that way =)

Are you serious? That wall covering looks like extremely expensive grasscloth! Beautiful texture--a very cool look!
